Friday, June 2, 2000:Boa
Boa is the band that performed "Duvet", the opening theme from Serial Experiments: Lain. They have 4 .mp3 files available for download, including "Duvet," which always makes me think of the series.

Tuesday, May 30, 2000:WAKWAK Animation
This place has a bunch of clips from various anime made by Osamu "god of manga" Tezuka. Or at least I assume it does, I can never connect to anything except the Opening movies. Still interesting if you've always wanted a peek at (grainy real videos of) the Japanese intros to Kimba/Leo the lion or Astro Boy/Mighty Atom.

Sunday, May 21, 2000:Miho-chan's sketch gallery
My friend "Miho-chan" has a site containing her own artwork, mostly fan art of female fighting game characters. Pictures range from the expected popular characters (Mai "Bouncy" Shiranui from many SNK games) to the obscure (Maki from Final Fight 2) to the classic (Strider) and a few original chracters, like Cyble.

Friday, May 19, 2000:Some Japanese Shockwave board/role-playing game
The instructions are in Japanese, but the display is in English. The idea is: your heroes and a magic princess are trying to wipe out all of the monsters in a dungeon. There are a total of 5 heroes (you control two at a time) plus the princess. If the princess dies, game over. Each hero has a different number of actions per turn, from 2 (for the wizard) to 6 (for the faerie). Click on a hero, and either move it to an adjacent square, or select a special action from the menu. The princess has a holy beam (an attack) and a light spell (which shows where the enemies are). Like in most RPGs, spells have a limited number of uses. Tip: try to end your turn with none of your heros adjacent to a living monster.

This is a program hooked up to a massive database that plays "20 Questions." It learns every time someone plays with it. I visited it, and made it learn some things about anime.

New Spontaneous Knowledge (stuff it figured out by itself):
Anime probably doesn't eat shellfish
You might not pet anime
Anime is probably not used in Oriental cooking
You might not eat anime with Thanksgiving dinner
Anime probably doesn't have a pleasant smell
You might not score with anime
Things it didn't know that I specifically told it:
Anime does not help you clean your teeth
Anime is not usually stuffed
Anime is not an invertebrate
Things it already knew about anime:
Anime is not heavy
Anime is probably not considered helpful to humans
You might not control anime
Anime probably doesn't move

Tuesday, May 16, 2000:Nectaris -- Free download
While searching Hudson Soft's web page for info on the Virus Buster game (which I found!) I noticed a link labelled "Download." Well, being a Poor Starving College Student, I certainly appreciate free stuff, and followed it to a free version of Nectaris. (Looks like a game for the 8-bit Nintendo.)

Controls are pretty simple -- arrows (or mouse) to move around, Ctrl, or Space Bar, or left mouse button is the action button, right mouse button pops up what might be a save game menu. On the right-hand side of the screen is (during combat) a menu. The options are (from top to bottom): Move selected unit, Attack with selected unit, Status of selected unit, and End turn.

Pretty neat, but not too challenging so far. (It might pick up a bit later. "So far" means "Only up to the fourth map.")

Monday, May 15, 2000:NieA under 7
This is looks like a slice-of-life family anime ... with a little alien walking all over the screen. And a man-eating plant. Okay, after searching the web I disovered that it's about an alien (named NieA) who becomes friends with a poor young girl. Character design is by the co-creator of Serial Experiments: Lain. Four video streams (in Japanese, of course) are avalable here.

Monday, May 15, 2000:Virus Buster Serge
Cool! I never knew I was a Virus Buster. Surpsisingly, this site has quite a bit of English, even though it is the *official* Japanese home page for the series! (BTW, I don't speak Japanese.) The page hasn't been updated since 1998, and the list of episodes doesn't go past 10 -- so the show probably didn't do so well. It appears to be an animated sentai show. (Sentai = "Combat Task Force" Think Power Rangers)

Monday, May 15, 2000:Hello, world!
I like anime. At least some of it. I like to watch it, but unfortunately, this involves either a) shelling out a bunch of money to buy or rent tapes, or b) coordinating with other anime fans who have shelled out a bunch of money for tapes. The problem with a) is that I am Poor Starving College Student (TM), who needs to carefully spend his money on all sorts of important things. So anime must compete with food, gas, textbooks, and computer games. The problem with b) is that I have match up my time and tastes in anime with someone else. Not always convenient. But, surfing the *web* for anime stuff is both free and at my convenience. Of course, reading plot synopses and looking at pictures isn't as good as actually watching the stuff, but ... it's free!

Monday, May 15, 2000:Anime Turnpike
I've used the Anime Turnpike since it was hosted at Ohio State University, and it remains the biggest compilation of anime/manga related web pages I have ever seen. If you're interested in anime, YOU MUST VISIT IT. Check out Jei's Picks and the Weekly best-of if you don't feel like diving into the whole thing.
